Movies. They’re a classic American past-time. In the early days, cars and movies were inextricably linked through drive-in movie theaters, which have now all-but disappeared. Still, cars remain a large part of the movie experience. When you see a car in a movie, you can be sure that the manufacturers had a hand in putting their vehicle on the big screen – but directors also pick cars that best convey their vision for the story. We wanted to point out a few of these awesome Porsches in movies that are sure to stir up some nostalgia.
Top Gun’s 1957 Porsche 356 Speedster
You might remember Charlie careening through the crowded city streets in this Porsche as she chased Maverick on his Kawasaki Ninja 900. Although the combination of cheesy 80’s love music, Maverick’s inability to take constructive criticism, and a dramatic chase scene is completely ludicrous (especially when Maverick rev’s his engine over Charlie speaking), we still love watching the 356 Speedster in hot pursuit. Check out the clip below.
Risky Business’s 1979 Porsche 928
Another Tom Cruise classic brings the Porsche 928 to the big screen, and it looks great. Joel (Tom Cruise), and his best friend Miles decide to cut loose when Joel’s parents leave the house for a few days. But when Joel takes the Porsche out for a spin he ends up in a nightmare situation. If you don’t want to transform your home into a brothel to have your Porsche repaired, don’t park it on a dock.
Sixteen Candles 1983 Porsche 944
Ah, that wistful teenage angst. What better movie than John Hughes’s Sixteen Candles to remind us all of what high school could be like. In this movie, the Porsche 944 belongs to the ultra-dreamy senior, Jake, who Samantha (Molly Ringwald) just can’t seem to act normal around. It’s a feeling that almost anyone who’s had a crush can identify with. As melodramatic as those awkward self-discovery years of high school were, they have a slight mystique that we can’t help but appreciate.
No Man’s Land: The 1986 Porsche 911 Turbo Sport
Young undercover cop Benjy (D.B. Sweeny) gets assigned to infiltrate an auto-theft ring that specializes in stealing prized vehicles. What he doesn’t expect is to become friends with head car-thief Ted Varrick (Charlie Sheen) and have to combat his own urge for the fast-life. This is a classic movie featuring Charlie Sheen before he started “winning” and lots of beautiful European vehicles. Our favorite in the movie, is the 1986 Porsche 911. This chase scene says it all:
Porsches pop up in movies because they’re profoundly sweet. Their racing heritage and prestigious reputation make them the perfect addition to any movie where cars are a main focal point.
