NAIAS 2014: The Porsche 911 Targa – Hoop There It Is

It’s here.

The 911 Targa famously features an unusual convertible top that had a removable center panel and rear glass hoop-top (just Google it). Diehard fans will know that the initial 1967 model used plastic instead of glass. The new Targa will feature an automatically retracting center roof panel, which is quite impressive to behold in the video (the glass portion elevates itself as if onto a pedestal while the center panel slides underneath). In case you can’t watch the video, here’s Motor Authority’s description:

“When in action, the window flips open and tilts, allowing the soft top to slide past and furl itself into a compartment behind the rear seats, at which point the window closes once again. The whole process takes 19 seconds and can only be done while stationary.”

Two versions will be available: a 350 horsepower, 3.4-liter Targa 4 and a 400 horsepower, 3.8-liter Targa 4S. Both versions feature all-wheel drive, and of course will support PDK transmissions if you so choose.

Check out more photos at Motor Authority’s first look. The 911 Targas will arrive in the summer.
